The Orbital Garden

Taking inspiration from my clients love of music, and in particular their love for the band Orbital.

β€˜The band's name is taken from Greater London's orbital motorway, the M25, which was central to the early rave scene and party network in the South East during the early days of acid house.’

I have also taken inspiration from the M25 for my design. At the heart of the design is a rainwater feature and planted area, and around this, a circular path that takes guests on a journey in a continual orbit around the garden to the various locations it offers.

Further inspiration can be seen in the choice of materials and styling, the central focal point water feature has a brutalist style, reminiscent of the bridges that punctuate the motorway, the concrete paving slabs radiate out from the centre creating a sense of energy and motion. The planting amongst the gravel highlights the juxtaposition of the power struggle between the manmade and the power of nature.

Finally the steel trench piles that contain the raised beds are a visual nod to the same retaining walls either side of the M25. They also create drama, contrasting beautifully with the lush green planting and enveloping  the patio area with a sense of privacy and shelter.
